Two superb articles on connoisseurship

These really get at the heart of what it means to handle and judge objects for their collecting value.

The following article inspired the budget of $1,000 per object, and re-affirmed the importance of answering hard questions that would satisfy a purchasing committee that included Thomas Hoving. The buying power of $1,000 is, on eBay at least, remarkable, but only if you are willing to buy anything great from anywhere around the world. There are no cultural boundaries for sellers. I have purchased an Indonesian sculpture from Austria, an African sculpture from France, a Chinese bronze from England, and French paintings and sculptures from the U.S.
